Visa

Visa Information For International Students (KNU)

This guide applies to students at all KNU campuses.

Alien Registration Card (ARC)

All international students staying in Korea for more than 90 days must apply for an ARC at the Immigration Office within 90 days of arrival.

  • Required Documents:
  • Integrated Application Form, Passport (Original and copy of personal info & visa pages)
  • 1 Passport-sized photo (Taken within 6 months, white background)
  • Certificate of Enrollment, Certificate of Tuition Payment, Certificate of Admission
  • Certificate of Insurance (Copy of School, National Health, or Private insurance)
  • Proof of Residence (Lease agreement, Dormitory certificate, Notice of Expiration of Stay, or public utility receipts)
  • Application Fee: KRW 35,000 (Cash)
  • Process: Prepare documents → Reserve visit at hikorea.go.kr → Visit office for fingerprinting → Collect card (approx. 4–6 weeks later)
Warning: Do NOT leave Korea before receiving your ARC after application; otherwise, your visa may be canceled.

Visa Extension (D-2) and Change

Applications must be submitted before your current stay expires. (Available via group submission at the OIA or individual online application).

  • Required Documents: Application form, Passport (copy), ARC, Certificate of Enrollment, Academic Transcript, Tuition Payment/Scholarship Certificate, Proof of Residence, Certificate of Insurance.
  • Financial Support Documents (Crucial):
  • GPA below 2.0 (C): Must submit a bank statement with a balance of USD 18,000 or more.
  • GPA 2.0 or higher: Exempt from submitting financial documents.
  • If using a parent’s account, a Certificate of Family Relations is required.
  • Additional Documents (If applicable):
  • Students with GPA below 2.0 or those exceeding regular semesters: Statement of Reasons & Academic Advisor’s Confirmation.
  • Thesis/Research students (after coursework): Certificate of Expected Completion & Thesis Advisor’s Confirmation.
  • Fee: Group Submission (KRW 60,000) / Individual Online (KRW 50,000)

Change to Job-Seeking Visa (D-2 → D-10)

The university does not provide administrative support for D-10. Students must apply independently at the Immigration Office.

  • Required Documents: Application form, 1 photo, Passport, ARC, Diploma/Degree Certificate, Academic Transcript, Plan for Seeking Employment, Proof of Residence, TOPIK score (if applicable).
  • Fee: Approx. KRW 130,000–135,000 (Revenue stamp + application fee).

Part-time Work Permit

You must obtain a permit before starting work. Working without a permit results in fines and will negatively impact your future visa status.

  • Eligibility: GPA 2.0 or higher in the previous semester, lived in Korea for 6+ months (Language trainees need 90%+ attendance).
  • Permitted Hours (Weekdays):
  • Language Trainee (D-4): 10 hours/week (Required: TOPIK Level 2)
  • Undergrad (Freshman/Sophomore): 10 hours/week (Required: TOPIK Level 3 / Without level: 5 hours)
  • Undergrad (Junior/Senior): 10 hours/week (Required: TOPIK Level 4 / Without level: 5 hours)
  • Graduate Students: 15 hours/week (Required: TOPIK Level 4 / Without level: 10 hours)
  • Weekends & Vacations: Extended hours available (Undergrad: 30hrs–Unlimited / Graduate: 35hrs–Unlimited).
  • Documents: Application form (typed), Certificate of Business Registration, Employment Contract (copy), Confirmation for Part-time Employment (with OIA signature), Transcript, TOPIK score.

Reporting Obligations & Important Reminders

Failure to report changes within the deadline will result in significant fines.

  1. Change of Passport Info: Report within 15 days if your passport number, issuance date, or expiration date changes.
  2. Change of Address: Report within 14 days of moving. (Fine: up to KRW 1,000,000).
  3. How to Report: Online at hikorea.go.kr or visit the Immigration Office.
  • Note: KNU students fall under the jurisdiction of the Chuncheon Immigration Office.
  1. Academic Status Change: If you graduate, take a leave of absence, are expelled, or withdraw, your visa expires immediately. You must leave Korea within 30 days.
