Program Introduction

The Korean Language Education Center at Kangwon National University offers a Korean Language Learning Program for non-native speakers. This program is specifically for foreigners who wish to apply to undergraduate or graduate universities in Korea. It is combined with a course study of the introductory textbooks and a practical program of various cultural experiences, which is desirable for both international students to adjust to the Korean lifestyle and overseas Koreans to better understand of Korean culture along with learning Standard Korean. Our program is offered year-round, so you may begin your studies when it is most convenient for you. The classes are divided into five levels, and all new students can take a placement test to study in a suitable class.

Course Description — Level and Curriculum Overview
Level Curriculum Overview
Level 1(Basic) Target: Absolute beginners starting from Hangeul. Content: Learn the alphabet and basic structures for greetings and self-introductions.
Level 2(Elementary) Target: Learners with approx. 200 hours of prior study. Content: Expand vocabulary and practice natural pronunciation through daily topics like hobbies and travel.
Level 3(Intermediate) Target: Learners with approx. 400 hours of prior study. Content: Study Sino-Korean words and idioms to handle social tasks like finding housing or making repairs.
Level 4(Upper-Intermediate) Target: Learners with approx. 600 hours of prior study. Content: Develop formal communication skills for presentations, discussions, and logical writing on social topics.
Level 5(Advanced) Target: Learners with over 800 hours of prior study. Content: Achieve professional fluency to handle complex real-world tasks and understand deep cultural nuances.

Maximum Class Size

All Korean language courses are capped at 20 students.

Academic Standards & Level Advancement

To successfully complete the program and promote to the next level, students must meet the following academic requirements each semester.

Advancement Criteria
  • Attendance: Maintain a minimum attendance rate of 80%.
  • Academic Performance: Achieve a final composite grade of 70% or higher.
  • Certification: A Certificate of Completion is awarded only to students who meet both the attendance and grade requirements.
Note on Promotion: Students must successfully complete their current level (earn a Certificate of Completion) to be eligible for advancement to the next level.
Attendance Policy & Appeals

We understand that emergencies happen. If a student falls below the 80% attendance threshold due to extenuating circumstances, they must submit a formal Statement of Reason along with supporting documentation for administrative review.

Important : Mandatory Insurance Policy
  • Initial Entry: All international students must purchase 6-month private health insurance through the university immediately upon arrival.
  • Automatic Enrollment: Per Korean law, students are automatically enrolled in the National Health Insurance system after 6 months of continuous residence.
