1. Please briefly introduce yourself.

Hi everyone! My name is Vianny from Indonesia. I am a Master student in the Department of Storytelling at Kangwon National University. Although this major sounds uncommon, I get the chance to learn and explore various subjects on how narrative practice can be applied across the creative industry. My latest research draws upon humanities and children’s literature, but I also have a strong interest in art and culture.

 

2. Why did you choose to study at Kangwon National University?

At first, I chose Kangwon National University because I was impressed by the curriculum and syllabus on the department's website. I didn't even know storytelling existed as an academic major until I discovered KNU, which sparked my curiosity and deepened my academic interests. After studying here, I realized that KNU offers not only excellent academics but also a vibrant campus life and a welcoming environment. It has truly become the ideal place for both my academic and personal growth.

 

3. When you first learned about Storytelling as an academic major, what interested you the most? After actually studying it, was there anything that turned out to be different from what you had expected?

I have always been passionate about writing, reading, and literature, so discovering Storytelling as an academic major immediately caught my attention. What interested me the most was how interdisciplinary it is: I had the opportunity to study everything from mythology, film theory, and content theory to festival narratives, performing arts, and museum studies. I came to KNU without many expectations, but I soon realized that every part of our lives and every industry is built on stories. Storytelling has become more than just an academic major for me, it has become a way of understanding the world and living with greater purpose.

 

4. I’m curious about how your background as an Indonesian student has influenced your academic life in your major. When analyzing or creating stories, in what ways do you think your perspective differs from that of Korean students?

Interestingly, I don't think our perspectives are drastically different. However, as an Indonesian student, I find it easier to approach new theories, concepts, and literature from a multicultural perspective because I grew up in such a culturally diverse country. That background helps me connect with stories shaped by different languages, histories, and traditions. But at the same time, studying in Korea has taught me to appreciate how deeply Koreans preserve and value their cultural heritage, and I have learned a great deal from that authenticity.

 

5. What opportunities or experiences can students enjoy when they study at KNU?

Kangwon National University offers many opportunities for international students to fully immerse themselves in life in South Korea. Beyond career development programs, KNU provides a wide range of activities based on students' interests, along with scholarships, mental health support, and various student services. The university is always ready to assist whenever students need help. Most importantly, KNU creates a welcoming environment where students can build meaningful friendships, networks, and a strong sense of community.

 

 

6. What has been the most memorable experience during your student life at KNU?

I have many unforgettable memories at KNU, from performing at International Night and serving as an MC for the summer program to participating in campus promotional projects. However, my most memorable experience was presenting my paper at an international conference in Suwon in 2025. I joined multiple conferences throughout my entire academic journey, but it was my first time presenting in a conference. Thanks to KNU, I had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with researchers from around the world.

 

7. What surprised you the most about studying in Korea or at Kangwon National University?

What surprised me the most was how convenient life in Chuncheon is. I didn't realize that Gangwon Province is close to Seoul, so I get to enjoy a peaceful environment surrounded by nature while still being able to visit the capital easily. I also did not expect to meet many foreigner friends in this small city. But other than its unexpected weather, over time, Korea has truly come to feel like a second home to me.

 

 

 

8. Is there a particular place or moment in Chuncheon that made it feel like a second home to you?

Honestly, there wasn't one specific moment, but rather a combination of experiences that made Chuncheon feel familiar. During difficult times, I was always supported by my Indonesian community, even as people came and went. I found comfort in everyday moments—running along Gongjicheon, teaching English to children, volunteering, and joining dance classes. Although Chuncheon felt foreign at first, through this wonderful time, I finally know my way around, and somehow, my way forward too.

 

9. What inspired you to dream of becoming a writer of children’s literature or fiction? Were there any stories or books you loved as a child that influenced you?

I think it all started with my mom, who introduced me to books from a very young age. I grew up reading stories like Totto-chan, The Famous Five, Ironfist Chinmi, Dragon Ball, One Thousand and One Nights, and each of them quietly shaped my love for literature. Later, the Percy Jackson series was the book that truly made me fall in love with reading and inspired me to explore literature more deeply. Even today, those childhood stories continue to inspire my dream of becoming a writer of children's literature and fiction.

 

10. What are your goals after graduation?

Although I am a little nervous about life after graduation, I also have many dreams and goals that I am eager to pursue. I aspire to write and publish my own books, particularly children's literature and other works of fiction. In the long term, I hope to become a researcher and lecturer or even take part in the art industry. Hence, in the meantime, I plan to seek career opportunities in Korea while preparing my PhD applications.

 

11. If you were to turn your life at KNU into one story, what would the title be?

It is gonna be a memoir called "From a City, To a Chapter"

 

12. What advice would you give to students who are considering studying in Korea?

First and foremost, never be afraid to dream big and believe in yourself. If studying in Korea feels like the right path for you, embrace both the challenges and the opportunities that come with it. Even before you arrive, immerse yourself in Korean culture—read books, meet new people, and continue learning new skills. Life is shaped by the experiences we choose to pursue, so don't limit yourself and studying in Korea may become one of the most meaningful journeys of your lifetime.
